In the Legislative Session for 1997‐1998, the Vermont Legislature passed a comprehensive act, known as Act 117, aimed at reducing Driving Under the Influence offenses and the resulting traffic accidents and fatalities.
The Act represented a holistic approach to decreasing DUI offenses. There is a strong education component which focuses on prevention as well as post‐offense. The Act created the Coordinator for Alcohol and Traffic Safety Programs, who is responsible for coordinating all the programs and monitoring the incidence of DUI in the state. The Act also focuses on DUI enforcement and processing in the courts. It is this part of the Act on which the study focused.
