Sober Housing

Have you or someone you love ever been forced to leave a sober house or other group living setting? Did you or your loved one experience harm as a result (incarceration, homelessness, overdose, sexual exploitation, prolonged relapse or other harm)?

IMPORTANT: Involuntary discharge from a sober house can cause serious harm. Under Vermont law, people living in a sober house (recovery residence, transitional house) are tenants and are entitled to standard tenant protections. This means sober house landlords can not force you to leave a sober house unless they go through the court eviction process and obtain a judge’s order of eviction. Many sober houses routinely violate the law by subjecting tenants to unlawful removal without a judge’s order of eviction and this puts many vulnerable people at risk of serious harm, including overdose death.
